As someone about to enter the ring, I find it hard to believe that someone can go through something as physically intrusive and CONSTANT as pregnancy and somehow conveniently just forget that child is going to exist when making decisions about their career. If she's seven months pregnant she's likely reminded about this kiddo of hers that's coming every time she takes a breath and she's short-winded because it's squishing her lungs, every time she eats something and she ends up with heartburn, and every two hours when she has to get up to pee. She's unlikely to forget about that child just because someone is simultaneously talking to her about her role in the company. As for the link you posted, I LOVED LOVED LOVED that they talked about elder care as well as motherhood. Almost all women end up being part- or full-time caregivers at some point in their lives even if they never have children because so often the responsibility of caring for aging parents falls on women. For some women, this is just a return to a lifestyle similar to the one they had as a stay at home mom, but for many women it means interrupting a career they've finally just been able to reestablish after entering the workforce full-time later in life because they gave up so much to be home with kids, or giving up perks and benefits they've earned over decades of work either as a working mom or without children because the workplace is just not flexible enough to handle the fact that as you said, we all have lives outside of the office. Small changes really could make a HUGE difference. I'm optimistic those changes will come. Because while I applaud women who make the choice to jump into 90-hour workweeks with a child if they feel that is best for them, I really wish there were more options available. They only reason there aren't is because we are still playing by the rules men set up instead of finding creative solutions that would make life easier for all workers regardless of gender and regardless of family situation.
